Art and Environment: Creating the Main Staircase
When deciding the layout of our level before white boxing, our team had come up with the idea of having a big, grand staircase on one side of the room to get between floors as well as it stands in as a leverage point.
When creating the staircase, we used a program in Unity called ProBuilder. This program lets us click into the scene and draw our own shapes, even complex ones like the stairs. Once we get all the vertices of our shape in place and close the shape, we are left with a flat block of what we drew. We can then drag the shape out to make it wider for our purposes. We also added an invisible plane on top of each staircase to allow the player character and NPCs to smoothly walk up and down the stairs.
Once we completed one staircase, we were able to duplicate it two times for the stairs on either side to create one big grand staircase.
